Often times, the things that are making you lose sleep are things that you can control. The best sleep aid is self-awareness - pay attention to what is going on around you when you try to lie down. Is seeing David Letterman an important part of your routine before bed? Setting up your room can also be an important aid to sleep. I know that if I can see my alarm clock from my bed, I will spend more time looking at elapsed time than trying to fall asleep! You should also know where your bed is in relation to the exterior lights. If there is a lamp that shines in your eyes, falling asleep will not be easy. Supplements like valerian or melatonin work with your body in a much less addictive way. While you shouldn't rely on them without taking time to also consider your lifestyle, you may find them as the type of sleep aid you're looking for.
